Sarah el-Khatib

Sarah el-Khatib is a Social Worker and a Project Coordinator at the Women Charity League, an NGO that works at al-Tabbeneh, Tripoli, North Lebanon. Ms. El-Khatib works on two projects; one is a program of school support for students between the ages of 6 and 12, of the official Lebanese schools at al-Tabbeneh, whose parents are illiterate. She also works on implementing professional training courses in seam, esthetics and hairstyle with unskilled girls that include sessions on illiteracy and alphabetic and language structural teaching.

Ms. El-Khatib worked for two years at The Lebanese Council to Resist Violence against Women (LECORVAW) and then travelled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, to teach social science at the King Abdel Aziz University. She holds a teaching diploma in social work from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ University Lebanon).

Magda Amer

Dr. Magda Amer is a Biochemist, Naturopath, and Caller of Islam. Dr. Amer has also written many books in Arabic, English, and French. Among these books is a series named The Miraculous Nature of Human Creation, which highlights the interpretation of Islamic teachings from the naturopathic perspective and includes, the secrets of ablution, the wisdom behind lowering the gaze, and a farewell to stress welcome tranquility. Her books also deal with tolerance in Islam, Islamic perspectives on legislation for women, etiquette in Islam, inheritance in Islamic legislature, and an encyclopedia of Islamic “Fikh.” She has dedicated her knowledge to the service of Da’wah.
Dr. Amer received her PhD in biochemical analysis. She was appointed a fellow of Laboratory Analysis at Ain Shams University Hospital and was also a Lecturer of Immunology. She studied numerous naturopathic sciences including homeopathy, reflexology, acupuncture, cupping, aromatherapy, color therapy, herbal treatment, and nutritional healing from London International College. She is also a Certified Corporate trainer in Neurolinguistic programming, in hypnosis, and the Power of Energy 1 & 2 from the Canadian center of Dr. Ibrahim El Fiky. Dr. Amer received her B.A. in Islamic Legislation from Azhar University; she is licensed to deliver Islamic lessons in mosques.

Nisreen Haj Ahmad

Nisreen Haj Ahmad is the co-founder and co-director of Ahel and Mujtama3 to build leadership and support communities organize collective action for justice and freedom in the Middle East. After studying with Marshall Ganz, she spent 8 years providing coaching to 16 grassroots campaigns and trained more than 2000 leaders in Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria. Nisreen Haj Ahmad is the Senior Academic Manager at the Columbia University Middle East Research Center, based in Amman, Jordan. Ms. Haj Ahmad received her MPA in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Melati Abdul Hamid

Melati Abdul Hamid is Federal Counsel at the International Affairs Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers of Malaysia. Ms. Abdul Hamid’s professional concentration is public international law; she still retains a keen interest on the understanding of Islamic Law in modern contexts. Upon passing the New York Bar Exam in 2007, she returned to Malaysia to join government service and is now involved in negotiations for ASEAN Free Trade Agreements and bilateral investment treaties, in addition to the resolution of international legal disputes involving the Government of Malaysia.

Ms. Abdul Hamid studied law at the International Islamic University Malaysia, during which she represented Malaysia during the International Rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition annually held in Washington DC. In 2005, her team qualified for the final round of the Jessup Competition, beating over 100 other teams from 88 countries. She was named Best Oralist. She completed her Master’s in Law (LL.M) as a Fulbright scholar at Harvard Law School. Her LL.M Paper was on Islamic Constitutionalism, discussing the separation of powers between the three main branches of government in an Islamic country.

Shahnaz Taplin-Chinoy

Shahnaz Taplin-Chinoy is the Executive Director of Shahnaz Taplin-Chinoy and Associates, a mass media communications firm in the Bay Area, focusing on key social issues. Ms. Taplin-Chinoy was formerly Director of Public Information and Public Affairs at Planned Parenthood Alameda/San Francisco. She has also been a consultant to the ACLU, the Goldman Foundation, and the Gerbode Foundation and has conducted media workshops for NGOs in India, funded by The Ford Foundation and USAID. Her more recent work has focused on Diaspora philanthropy which includes research and a report entitled: “Silicon Valley Indian Americans Care, Commit and Contribute.” She also developed the strategic communications plan for The American India Foundation. She directs the Community Task Force on Homes for Children and is currently working on a book on Women’s Islam.

Qudsia Huma Khan

Qudsia Huma Khan is the Principal of the Junior School, part of the Qurban and Surraya Educational Trust. The Trust has four schools and one degree college for girls and caters to 4,500 pupils. These schools and college provide quality education to the poor at the lowest possible cost and all orphans and needy are educated free. Ms. Khan joined the institution in 2002.

Amal Mahmoud Fayed

Amal Mahmoud Fayed is the Secretary General for the Forum for Women in Development, a network of 105 NGOs in Egypt. Ms. Fayed also serves in Cairo as the special advisor to the V-Day Karama, addressing strategies to end violence against women in the Arab world. A development expert and trainer, in 2002 and 2003 Ms. Fayed ran a series of Oxfam GB–Yemen workshops, engaging civil society organizations to examine an Arab training guide focusing on violence against women and domestic violence. In 1995, she led the participation of Egyptian NGOs in the Beijing +5 assessment of progress on implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. As Chairperson of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, Ms. Fayed advocated for the ratification of the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women by Arab governments to protect the rights of Arab women against discrimination. She earned a BSc in Commerce and Accounting in 1976 at ‘Ain Shams University in Egypt, where she was secretary of the Culture & Politics Club, responsible for rescue and nurse training during the October 1973 war, and president of the ‘Ain Shams Fatat Association.

Anjum Babukhan

Anjum Babukhan is the Director of Education at the Glendale Academy in Hyderabad, India. Ms. Babukhan is a leading teacher trainer, certified parenting facilitator, freelance writer and Education Chair for Yi (Young Indians). She is a former Chairperson of the women’s wing of FICCI.

A competent, energetic and a genuinely committed person, Ms. Babukhan is an academician. She received her education in the U.S. where she was born and raised. However, she was always fascinated with her rich Indian culture and Muslim heritage. Today, she stands as a perfect blend of the east and west as a universally principled global character. Her faith and cultural “tehzeeb” involved her as representative to participate in many multicultural programs.

In college, Ms. Anjum became the President of Psi Chi – the National Honors Society in Psychology (U. S. A.) and moved on to become an All American Academic Nominee. She was selected in the “Who’s Who of American Colleges” and won the Psychology Honors Award from Loyola of Chicago. She always had a natural flair for outstanding leadership. Ms. Anjum received her M.Ed in Education Administration and Instructional Leadership from UIC, after which she married and moved to India and became involved with many educational and philanthropic ventures.
