Companion of the Prophet Muhammad
Lubaynah was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and one of the early Muslim converts. Lubaynah was of Afro-Arab descent. She was enslaved by the Banu Adi clan of the Quraysh. In 614, the Quraysh led a series of attacks against the Muslims of lower classes. Lubaynah was amongst the Muslims being tortured during this time. She was forced to undergo extreme acts of violence under the Meccan heat for days upon end. Umar ibn Khattab, a member of the Banu Adi, was put in charge of undertaking Lubaynah’s torture. After witnessing the abuse Lubaynah was put through, Abu Bakr freed Lubaynah from Umar’s ownership and manumitting her in the name of Islam.
