In April 2009, Melanne Verveer was instated by President Barack Obama in the newly created station of Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s issues.
Formerly serving as the Chief of Staff to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during the Clinton administration, she co-founded Vital Voices Global Partnership in 2001, an NGO devoted to mentoring women in the developing world to take on leadership positions in government and business. Ambassador Verveer was essential in the establishment of the President’s Interagency Council on Women which serves as a model to address the issues of women. Involved for over 20 years with women’s rights, she is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Women’s Foreign Policy Group, the Washington Institute on Foreign Affairs and Women In International Security.
Ambassador Verveer, in her capacity as Ambassador-at-Large, rallies support for women’s rights and empowerment through initiatives intended to boost female right to education and health care, to combat violence against women and girls, and to ensure that women’s rights are completely enmeshed with human rights in U.S. foreign policy. With that in mind, Verveer hopes to aid Iraqi and Afghani women participate in their incipient governments, protect women from human trafficking, improve the quality of maternal care, and focus on preventing rape as a weapon of war.
