Marie Wilson

"I want little girls to know that they can reach the top, but I want big, grown men and women right now to make sure that I'm telling them the truth, because again, we have an opportunity to put enough women in power to where a little girl can grow up and start to lead."

Marie Wilson

About

Marie Wilson is dedicated to the advocating of women’s issues. She is the founder and president of The White House Project, co-creator (with Gloria Steinem) of Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, President of the Ms. Foundation, and author of Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World (2004).

Among her accomplishments, one of the most notable is The White House Project. In 2004, Wilson left the Ms. Foundation to dedicate her full energies to her work with The White House Project. Wilson founded The White House Project, recognizing that the role women play in leadership remains restricted and believing that a true representative democracy needs to stand on the leadership of both genders. Hence, The White House Project has become a lead voice in the quest for women’s leadership.

While Wilson was at the helm of the White House Project, the group concentrated on inventive research and initiatives like revolutionary research on the political participation of young women, an analysis of women’s appearances as guests on Sunday political talk shows, the convening of women CEOs and executives for two national leadership summits, a bi-coastal conference of international women leaders, a partnership with Girl Scouts to launch the Ms. President patch, and initiatives to influence popular culture.

Wilson was the first women elected to Des Moines City Council as a member-at-large in 1983 and served as an official delegate to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995. In 2000, with Mattel, she introduced the world to President Barbie. She is also the author of the acclaimed Mother Daughter Revolution (1993).
