Faith: Sikhism
Country: India
About
Mai Bhago was a strong advocate for Sikh rights during the reign of the Mughal Dynasty. In 1705, she fought alongside forty men in the Battle of Mukstar after the Mughals demanded that all Sikhs of Anandur either renounce their faith or leave. Forty men signed a document giving up their allegiance to Guru Gobind, but Mai shamed them into defending their religion. A battle was fought to defend the Guru as he shot arrows from a nearby mountain, and all but Mai Bhago were killed. Guru Gobind took her on as his bodyguard and she served him until his death.
Her house has been converted into a holy site, Gurdawara Tap Asthan Mai Bhago.
