About

A researcher at the University of Chicago, Dr. Hema Pokharna has devoted much of her time to promoting non-violence and publishing articles in scientific and religious journals and is involved with many groups who hold these views.

Born in India, she received religious instruction from Jain nun and monks who highlighted the importance of inner harmony and peace. She extended this education to promoting non-violence and peace through her involvement with the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions and Play for Peace. Moreover, Dr. Pokharna directly promotes non-violent conflict mediating techniques through her group Journeys of Life.

She is a member of the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions which seeks to foster harmony and engagement between the world’s religions. She is also involved with the Federation of Jain Associates of North America’s (JAINA) Interfaith Activities committee which strives to provide an exchange of religious views and promote tolerance.  Dr. Pokharna serves as the vice chair of Play for Peace, a program which aims to cultivate children as future leaders by creating a non-threatening environment where children of all faiths and backgrounds come together.
