Soraya Syed was born and raised in London. Of mixed Pakistani-French origin, Soraya returned to the UK in 2005 after completing her calligraphy apprenticeship and receiving icazetname (the authoritative Islamic calligraphy license) from Istanbul, Turkey. She read Arabic and History of Art and Archaeology at The School of Oriental and African Studies and in 2001 graduated from the Masters program in Visual Islam and Traditional Arts at the Prince’s School, London.

Soraya has participated in many calligraphy exhibitions in various countries. Her portfolio includes published and exhibited work in Museum of Islamic Art, Qatar, Shaza Hotel, Medina, and the British Museum. She has also written calligraphy in King Khaled Book, in IMAX movie, “Journey to Mecca: In the Footsteps of Ibn Battutah,” and collaborated with the British Council and Sony PlayStation for different projects. 

Soraya now resides in Greater London with her husband and children. She gives talks and workshops to Muslim and non-Muslims around the UK and abroad.
