Sara Silvestri is an Assistant Professor in International Politics at City University London. Dr. Silvestri is in charge of courses and research on the role of religion in international relations and on Political Islam. She is an expert of Muslim political mobilization, Islamic institutions in contemporary Europe, and of public policies concerning religion and Muslim communities. She is also the Director of the Global Justice program at the Von Hügel Institute, a research center specialized in faith and social affairs based at St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge.


Since 2008, Dr. Silvestri has served on the Advisory Council of the Anna Lindh Foundation, the body established by the governments of the Euro-Mediterranean area to promote cultural dialogue and civil society collaboration in the region. She is also a “Global Expert” with the UN’s Alliance of Civilization. In the past, she has also coordinated the Islam in Europe program of the Brussels-based think tank EPC.

Dr. Silvestri recently published Europe’s Muslim Women: Potential Aspirations and Challenges (KBF,2008). Her ongoing research includes the impact of counter-terrorism on Muslim and Irish communities in Britain, and secular and religious ideologies of violence (both with the London Metropolitan University).

Dr. Silvestri received her Ph.D. and MPhil from the University of Cambridge and was a Post-Doctoral fellow there in 2006. She was a Marie Curie Fellow in Paris, studied migration policies at the ULB in Brussels, and has a “laurea” degree from La Sapienza University, Rome.
