The Moderator is Les Campbell who is the NDI senior associate and regional director in the Middle East and North Africa.
Morocco is one of the most prominent examples of broad political, social and economic development in the Middle East and North Africa. Since his accession in 1999, King Mohammed VI has undertaken reforms that have begun to liberalize the political process and expand development programs throughout the country.
The National Initiative for Human Development, launched in 2005, provides a platform for development policy to be translated into practical approaches aimed at achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals outlined by the United Nations. Complementing this framework, specific advances have been made to promote personal freedoms and women’s rights, such as a 2004 amendment to the Moudawana (family law) that awarded women and men equal rights in divorce, inheritance and custody matters. While reforms have gained momentum, the important question remains how citizens can contribute to the political and development process in ways that meaningfully impact their lives and address the issues they are most concerned about.
