The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) promotes and defends women’s human rights in Indonesia.

Established by a presidential decree in 1998 after riots brought attacks on women in several Indonesian cities, the institution functions as an independent body engaging the Indonesian government and society at large. Through a variety of sub-commissions, Komnas Perempuan initiates policy reforms, mediates between women’s organizations and government institutions, provides information and resources to survivors of violence, and facilitates the development of nationwide networks to eliminate violence against women.
